Designing the Perfect Dining Room
Bradley Price on June 26, 2023
The dining room is often an integral part of any home; it's the space where you come together to eat and discuss your day as a family. In addition, it can also double as a place to play, paint, draw and even work if you don’t have a separate home office. In this article, we take a look at some tips to help you when designing the perfect dining room for your household.

The purpose of the room

One important thing to consider is the purpose of the room; this won’t be the same for all dining spaces. Some people use their dining room for formal eating occasions only, whereas others will use the dining room as a multifunctional space that performs several different roles. How your room is going to be used will change the decoration, your furniture and everything about the room. For example, you may choose a smaller fold-away dining table if you also want to use the room as a workout space. Whatever the purpose, keep this in mind throughout your design process.

Measure your space

It's important to get accurate measurements of your dining room so you can figure out what size table you can accommodate and if you can include any other furniture in the room, such as a sideboard or chair, standing plants or a large lamp. Once you have your measurements, it can be helpful to do a quick drawing to see where all the furniture can be placed and how much space you’ll need around each item to allow you to move comfortably. This will give you the measurements needed so you can buy the furniture you want.

Have a style in mind

There are many different styles of dining room you can opt for, from traditional, modern, industrial, colourful and everything in between. The style you want will influence your choice of furniture and decorative features. If everything ties in together, your dining room will look more like one cohesive space with a nice flow. If you’re unsure of the style you want, take a look online; there are lots of design inspiration websites that will help you choose a style of dining room that suits your taste.

Get the dining table right

The main piece of furniture in any dining room is the dining table; you need to get this right to have the perfect dining room. Your table should be functional, aesthetically pleasing, the right size for the space and the right style. Oak dining tables are great for traditional dining rooms; they’re solid and high quality, come in a range of sizes and look pleasing to the eye. You can also choose glass or another material to suit the look that you’re after. You’ll also need to buy the chairs to go with the table; some will say these are even more important than the table itself. Your chairs should be comfortable, the right height for the table and suitable for your family. A family with small children who like to make a mess might want to opt for leather chairs or a faux leather alternative that can easily be cleaned and wiped down. An older couple might choose suede or something more luxurious and comfortable that they can take pride in keeping in pristine condition. Where possible, try to sit on your dining chairs at the table before buying; this will help you see how comfortable you’ll be and what it will feel like to use the table every day. If this isn’t possible, make sure you read the reviews carefully to see what other people think and their feedback.
Designing the perfect dining room involves considering its purpose, accurate measurements, chosen style, and suitable furniture. By planning thoughtfully, you can create a space that reflects your personal style and enhances your home's aesthetics. Choose a dining table that is functional, visually appealing, and the right size and style. Pair it with comfortable chairs that suit your family's needs. Lighting and colour scheme play a vital role in creating the desired ambience. Overall, designing the perfect dining room requires a balance between practicality, style, and personal preferences to create a space that brings joy and togetherness to your home.
